The Battle Of Saragarhi

There are multiple battles which are written in the history and we have read them. However, Many of such war events are not written yet anywhere in the history and we are completely unaware of those. The Battle of Saragarhi is one such war event which is not written in the history and was not taught us in schools.

Battle of Saragarhi was fought on 12 September 1897 between Sikh soldiers of British Indian Army and Pashtun Orakzai tribesmen of Afganistan. 21 brave sikh soldiers fought with more than 10000 Afgani invaders and this is the one greatest last stands in military history.

Back in 19th century, British was ruling Indian territory and The British Indian Army tried to gain control of the hilly Central Asian province which was in a long-standing conflict with local tribes and clans. Many battles were fought with Afgani tribes and hundreds of Indian soldiers were martyred towards the British cause.

Saragarhi post lies between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan. It was setup as a communication post between these two Forts, considering they were not able to directly communicate with each other. The communication used to happen through mirror encoded messages.

21 sikh soldiers were appointed in the Saragarhi post to pass on the messages. It was lead by Hawilder Ishwar Singh. Since this battalion was appointed just for communication purpose, they were provided with less number of ammunition. Due to this fact, around 10,000 Afgani warriors attacked this small post to capture and break the communication between the other two Forts. Saragarhi commander signalled the other Forts of British Indian Army that they are under attack and require re-inforcement. However, it was stated by the commanders of other forts that the help can not be sent immediately. The sikh soldiers in Saragarhi decided to fight to the last to prevent the enemy capturing the fort. In spite of being out numbered, the decision of fighting against thousands of warriors, was later recognized by British Army and is still being remembered.

During this battle, those sikh soldiers killed hundreds of afgani warriors. The leaders of Afgani warriors repeatedly asked to surrender but the sikh soldiers never gave up and continued to fight. When the ammunition with sikh soldiers got over, they started fighting with swords and  sharp rings which they used to carry on their pagadi(sikh's cap). The sikh soldiers fought for 7 long hours and killed around 600 Afgani warriors & injured many of them. At the end, all of the 21 sikh soldiers were martyred. The Afgani soldiers captured the Saragarhi fort but could not hold it for long as British attacked them back and re-captured the fort.

This incident is not recorded in history but it is remembered by Punjabi sikhs. Now, Bollywood is making 3 movies based on this incident.

1. Kesari - You can see Akshay Kumar playing the lead role.

2. Son of Sardars - Ajay Devgan is playing the lead role.

3. Battle of Saragarhi - Randeep Hooda is playing the lead role.
